Garlic Roll Cupcakes

I saw this Garlic Roll Cupcake recipe over on a blog called Plain Chicken the other day and immediately bookmarked it. It looked like a very simple make and they looked really delicious.

I am always looking for quick and easy bread/roll recipes to serve with meals, and these looked like they would be the perfect addition to an Italian Meal, or with soup, salads, casseroles, etc.

I did make a few changes however. (I usually do. I cannot leave well enough alone!)

Garlic Roll Cupcakes

We do not have refrigerated French Bread Dough here where I live, so I used refrigerated Croissant roll dough, which we do have. I simply unrolled the dough and pressed the perforations together to make it a more solid sheet.

I understand that in the U.S. you can get sheets of the Croissant roll dough that haven't been cut for separating. If you can get that, then use that. One step in the preparation will not be needed and they  will be even quicker to make.

I also chose to make my own Garlic Seasoning. I like making my own seasoning mixes. That way I can control what goes into them. There are no preservatives or additives.  The mixes always end up tastier and fresher than anything you could buy!

I have always enjoyed making my own mixes, and have a whole page dedicated to just that, which you can find here.  It is filled with all sorts. Making your own seasonings and mixes is great fun!  Just make sure you label them or you will find yourself one day looking at a container of whatever and asking yourself, what the heck is this? LOL  Been there, done that, learned my lesson!!

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE GARLIC ROLL CUPCAKES

Just a few simple ingredients. You can use a ready made garlic seasoning if you wish, but I like to make my own. Its easy to make.  Makes exactly the amount required and tastes delicious. Plus I know everything that is in it. I include ingredients and just how to do that below.

  • 1 can of refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1/4 cup (60g) of butter, softened
  • Garlic seasoning (see below)
  • 3 TBS of grated Parmesan cheese

Garlic Roll Cupcakes

You can find Crescent Roll Dough in the refrigerator aisle of the grocery store.  If you are in the U.K. you can use Jus Rol Croissant Dough, which is in the refrigerator aisle along with the ready made pastry dough and next to the spreads. (or at least it always was when I lived there.

I used salted butter. You can use unsalted if you wish, and or if salted butter bothers you you can decrease the amount of salt in the garlic seasoning mix.

I make my own garlic seasoning so I can control what it in it. There are no preservatives or additives and everything is in perfect proportion.  I tell you how below.  I can promise you it is really good!

The additional Parmesan is to sprinkle over the top of the rolls prior to baking. I like this amount of Parmesan to be a bit coarser then the one used in the filling.  Pre-grated is perfectly fine.

HOW TO MAKE GARLIC ROLL CUPCAKES

These are not at all hard to make.  Just follow the instructions and you are only a few minutes away from having a really tasty roll to enjoy with your supper!

Preheat the oven to 375*F/180*C/ gas mark 5. Butter a six cup muffin tin really well, or spray with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.

Make your garlic seasoning (see below).

Break open your tin of rolls and unroll them on a cutting board. Press the perforations together until you have one sheet.

Spread the butter over the sheet of roll dough. Sprinkle the garlic seasoning evenly over top. Roll back up tightly.

Using a sharp knife, cut the roll  crosswise into six evenly sized pieces. Place into the buttered muffin tins, cut side down.

Sprinkle the additional Parmesan cheese over top of each roll evenly.

Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, until well risen and golden brown. Serve warm!

How to Make the Garlic Seasoning:

I made my own garlic seasoning for this. It made just enough for this recipe, so if you are doubling the recipe you will need to double these amounts.  It is delicious and would work on any garlic bread.  Do note because it has cheese in it, it will need to be stored in the refrigerator

1/2 TBS garlic powder (not salt)
1/4 tsp onion powder (not salt)
1/2 tsp dried oregano flakes
1/2 tsp dried basil flakes
1/2 tsp dried thyme
1/2 tsp dried parsley
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp black pepper
3 TBS finely grated Parmesan Cheese

Mix all of the ingredients together in a small bowl to use in the rolls.

I was really REALLY pleased with how these turned out.  They were lovely and flaky and had a beautiful flavor.  See the below photo to see one broken open.

I would serve these to company as well.  In that case I would double the recipe! I cannot see anyone turning down one of these!  I enjoyed two cheeky ones with a hot cup of soup!

Garlic Roll Cupcakes

Refrigerated crescent roll dough is something which I always try to keep in my refrigerator. It comes in very handy just as is for a quick and easy roll option when it comes to supper time, but it is also useful in many other ways. Here are some of my favorite ways to use it!

PUMPKIN PIE ROLL UPS - Oh my goodness.  Croissant roll dough is spread with some cream cheese, pumpkin puree and a delicious Pumpkin Spice/cinnamon sugar mixture before rolling up to enclose all of the fillings. Placed into a baking dish and sprinkled with more of the cinnamon sugar mixture prior to baking to perfection. These are fabulous served warm with pouring cream, custard or ice cream. A perfectly autumnal dessert!

BBQ BEEF CROISSANT PIE - Croissant roll dough is used to line an 8-inch round pie tin, with the points over-hanging the sides. A delicious BBQ beef filling is spooned into the crust and then the points are folded back over the filling.  A generous amount of cheese is sprinkled over top and the whole thing is baked until the crust is golden brown, the cheese has melted and the filling is deliciously bubbling.  Cut into wedges to serve. A salad goes very well along side, but so do fries!  (just saying)

  1. Sounds tasty. I don't care for the crescent dough so I'll try it with ordinary bread dough and see what they turn out to be. Might not work but I'm sure they'll be edible.
