Croissant Hot Dogs

Croissant Hot Dogs

When I was growing up, every Friday night was hot dog night.  You could bank on it and my mom made the best hot dogs in the world.  All of our friends wanted to be invited to supper on hot dog night.

Mom used to use an old fashioned electric grill that was probably very similar to the panini grills that you can buy today.  It had a cloth covered cord and I believe you could remove the grill plates and turn them over to make waffles.

Mom always used the Eastern soft-sided, top-cut hot dog buns. She would butter those soft sides and then grill them in the grill until toasted.

Once those were crisp and golden brown, she would pop them into the oven and begin with cooking the frankfurters.  Those would be split almost all the way through and opened up like a book.  They would then be grilled on the grill until they were golden brown too!

We would enjoy them with sweet pickle relish, chopped onions and French's American mustard. Mom would wrap them in folded paper towel and we would each get two of them. Oh boy, but they were some delicious. I remember we also always had a scoop of ice cream for dessert. Nothing tasted better than those Friday night hotdogs!

Until now.

When I saw these Croissant Hot Dogs on Delish, I knew that I wanted to try them.  Hot dogs?  Croissants?  Did I just die and go to heaven?  I think so!  These are simply fabulously moreish,  and deliciously decadent! You have been warned!

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE CROISSANT HOT DOGS

Just a few simple ingredients. If you buy the best and freshest that you can, you cannot go wrong!

  • 4 all beef hot dogs (buy the best you can afford)
  • 4 fresh store-prepared all-butter croissants
  • 4 slices of processed cheese
  • your favorite hotdog condiments (ketchup, pickle relish, mustard, onions, bacon, etc.)

Croissant Hot Dogs

I don't have a Costco really close to me, but if I did I would buy their all-beef frankfurter/hotdogs.  I love them and they are a bit larger when compared to most regular all-beef hotdogs.  I used Schneiders regular all beef hotdogs.  I did not want to use a juicy jumbo as I felt it would be too big.

I used the frozen croissants that you get in the frozen section of the grocery store. You are basically just heating them up as they are already cooked, pretty much.

I used Extra Cheddar cheese slices by Kraft. They are the best cheese slices out there and taste very much like American cheese. I know they do cost a bit more than the regular cheese slices and are not individually wrapped, but I do find their flavor to be  worth the extra pennies.

For condiments I used a base of sweet relish under the dog, some Dijon honey mustard drizzled over top and finely diced raw white onion. I really enjoyed this once-in-a-blue-moon treat!

HOW TO MAKE CROISSANT HOT DOGS

Its a simple thing really. I do use the air fryer to cook my frankfurters, but you can use any method you enjoy and what works best for you! Skillet, oven, grill, etc.

Prepare your hot dogs as per your favorite way. I cook mine in the air fryer. 350*F/180*C, 8 to 10 minutes.

Croissant Hot Dogs

While your hotdogs are cooking, cut the croissants in half lengthwise from the top down, taking care not to cut them all the way through. Cut your cheese slices in half or quarters, and arrange them on each cut side of the croissant.

Place your cooked hot dogs into the sliced croissants between the walls of cheese and return to the heat of the air fryer. Leave in the heat to melt the cheese.

Top with your desired hot dog garnishes and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Croissant Hot Dogs

I was really surprised at how delicious this croissant dog was, although I am not sure why (I mean hot dogs and croissant's what's not to love!)  It seemed a perfect match!  The only thing which could have made it taste any better would have been if there had been some bacon involved.

If you are wanting an extra special treat, why not try one off these delicious hot dogs today!  I enjoyed mine with a cheeky side of BBQ potato chips (Old Dutch Dutch Crunch).  I chose to use sweet pickle relish, honey Dijon mustard and some finely chopped raw onion as my toppings! I was in hot dog heaven!

Croissant Hot Dogs

If you enjoy hotdogs as much as I do, you might also enjoy these other versions. Really simple and incredibly delicious! Real family and children pleasers.

CHEESE & ONION BAKED BEAN DOGS -  I got this delicious recipe from my friend Pam. Simple to make they are delicious. If you like baked beans and you enjoy hotdogs, then this is a match made in heaven.  These are fabulously tasty!

GRILLED CHEESE DOGS -  Two of my favorite things combined into one very tasty hot dog.  I like to use the top cut soft sided hot dog buns for these and I split the weiners down through the middle, opening them up like a book before I grill them. Once grilled they are tucked into those buns with plenty of cheese and grilled to toasty brown grilled cheese perfection!
