If you are looking for a tasty sandwich to serve along side a soup or a salad that is quick, easy and delicious, look no further! Ham & Cheese Roll Ups fit the bill perfectly.
Not only are these quick and easy to make but they also use only 3 main ingredients and go together in a flash. Rather than having to stand there and make 8 individual sandwiches, this bakes into one easy roll that you can cut into thick slices when done!
Not only does this roll up baked sandwich go together with soups or salads, but it also makes a great snack for game nights, especially if you serve it with a honey mustard or a horseradish dip. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
This is perfect for entertaining. I was inspired by a multitude of recipes on Pinterest, but was especially drawn to this one on The Comfort of Cooking. All of the recipes were pretty similar, but this was seemed to be very easy and uncomplicated. We all know how I like uncomplicated.
I love the idea of taking a few simple ingredients and then combining the to make something delicious. In this case there were only three basic ingredients.
The pizza dough, the ham and the cheese. I added a thin layer of mustard, which worked very well.
We are fortunate in our area that we have some really great artisanal mustard that are produced locally. All grainy mustards, they come in a few different flavors.
You can get a Bavarian.an apple, a curry pineapple, and a host of others. Today I chose to use the curry pineapple. I thought it would work well with both the ham and the cheese. Ham and pineapple are perfect partners. Cheese and curry are also perfect partners.
And mustard goes with both. So, it seemed like the perfect choice to me! It worked out deliciously!
If I make these again (and I will) I will use more ham in the filling. I was overly concerned that the center of the bread would not cook properly. This fear was for naught as you can see the center cooked beautifully.
They were still really tasty however and went very well with my wild mushroom soup. Just a cup of soup, for a quick and easy supper. When you have a houseful of hungry grandsons snapping at your heels you want something that will go together in a flash and still taste good!
WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE HAM & CHEESE ROLL UPS
Just a few very simple ingredients. If you always use top choice ingredients, you will always end up with a delicious finish!
1 can of refrigerated pizza dough (can use a ball of frozen pizza dough, completely thawed)
1 TBS of grainy mustard (I used curry pineapple)
1/2 pound (227g) sliced baked ham
1 cup (115g) shredded pizza cheese combo
Here in Canada, I used the Pillsbury refrigerated pizza dough that comes in a can. You could use any pizza dough I think, even the package of dry mix that you mix up yourself, or frozen pizza dough that you simply thaw.
The important thing is that it meets the size requirements when rolled out. You can find the refrigerated dough in the chiller section of the grocery store. The dry dough mix in the Italian/pizza mix section and the frozen dough in the freezer cabinet.
I used a locally produced artisanal mustard that we can buy at our local farmer's market. It is a grainy mustard and comes in a wide assortment of flavors. Today I used the curry pineapple one which I thought would go very well with the ham and the cheese.
Use a good quality baked ham from your local deli or the deli counter at the shops. I probably should have used more, but, as I said, I didn't want to risk over-filling them and then having the dough in the center not cook through completely or end up doughy.
The cheese I used was a pre-grated mix of mozzarella, Parmesan and fontina cheeses. A so called Italian blend. It worked great, but I think a double cheddar would also work as would a combination of cheddar and Swiss cheeses.
HOW TO MAKE HAM & CHEESE ROLL UPS
Nothing could be easier to make than these tasty sandwiches. All in one, three basic simple ingredients. They really are simple to make, and oh so tasty when they are done!
Preheat the oven to 400*F/200*C/ gas mark 6. Line a baking tray with some baking parchment. Set aside.
Roll out your pizza dough to a rectangle, 8 X 12 inches in size. Spread with the mustard to within 1/2 inch of the sides.
Cover with the ham evenly, leaving a border of 1/ inch. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over top.
Roll up from one short edge to completely encase the ham and cheese. Pinch the seams at either end together to seal and place onto the lined baking sheet, seam side down.
Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, laying a sheet of foil lightly over top if you think it is browning too quickly. It will be a deep golden brown when done.
Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then slice into 8 thick slices with a serrated knife to serve. Serve warm.
I think I could probably have been a bit more generous with my ham, and if I make them again, I will be, but these were still really delicious sandwiches. I think the addition of the mustard was genius. I am so lucky that I have some delicious artisanal mustards available locally.
You can use any mustard I think, or even a combination of mustard and mayo. I think it adds a lovely touch, some extra flavor and alleviates the need for a sauce to dip them in! Quick, easy and delicious! You can't go wrong!
Some other hot sandwiches that you might enjoy in my English Kitchen are:
HOT HAM & CHEESE ROLLS (with bacon and caramelized onion) -These really are very easy to make. Probably the most time consuming part is the caramelizing of the onions. If you are not keen you can always leave them out, but I highly recommend you do make them as they really add to the deliciousness of this tasty sandwich! With layers of ham, cheese, bacon and caramelized onions, these tasty hot rolls always go down a real treat!
SOUTH CAROLINE BIRD DOG SANDWICHES - Crisp and crunchy Chicken strips, crisp smoky bacon, rich cheese, and a honey mustard sauce, all layered up and served in a warm hot dog bun. These tasty sandwiches are great for a quick lunch, dinner or even a party! Hot sandwich perfection that everyone loves!

This is a great recipe as it would be so easy to change out the type of meat and cheese to make a variety of flavor combinations. I’m thinking Turkey with pesto and Provolone or Roast Beef with some sautéed mushrooms and onions and Mozzarella
