I can hear you all scratching your heads now and thinking that I have lost my marbles . . . I mean, really . . . Spaghetti on Toast??? What ever will I do next!
There are times however when nothing else will do . . . this is the ultimate comfort food . . . nursery food that brings us back to the bosom of our mum's and home sweet homes . . .
Perhaps you've had a rough day at work, or had a bit of bad news. Maybe you're just feeling downright lazy . . .
Or . . . and this is a
real biggie . . . maybe you just get a hankering every once in a while for good old spaghetti from a tin! It's absolutely not gourmet . . . it's definitely not al dente . . . heck it's probably not even a real tomato sauce! Sometimes you just don't care! You just gotta do what you gotta do!
Most people over here just dump a tin of heated spaghetti over top of some toast, but you know me . . . I can't leave well enough alone and I just have to pimp it . . . I can't help myself!
When I was a kid, the biggest treat my mother could make for us for our tea was hotdogs and tinned spaghetti. We loved it! We didn't have it very often, but when we did we were over the moon. We didn't have it with toast either . . . we always just had it with buttered bread. But you know the British . . . they love their toast and they love to put things on it, and not just marmalade either!
Try it. You might even like it! (Nigella might even be tempted to sneak down the stairs in her dressing gown and indulge in this one! Do ya think??)
*Spaghetti On Toast*for two
Printable RecipeThis is comfort food, plain and simple, with my added twist of course!
1 large tin of Spaghetti in tomato sauce
(I like Heinz)
1/2 package of smoked frankfurters
4 slices of toasted bread, buttered (your choice, wheat or white)
a good grinding of black pepper
a handful of grated strong cheddar cheese
No need for genius here. Slice the frankfurters into coins and brown them in a skillet. Dump on the tin of spaghetti and heat through while you make your toast. Place the buttered toast onto two warm plates. Divide the spaghetti mixture between both plates, covering the toast. Grind some black pepper on top and sprinkle with the grated cheese. Serve immediately.
And of course only one thing would do for afters . . .
Yep . . . Creamed Rice.
(Todd is still suffering from his tooth ailment and so soft foods are still in order.)
Believe me, I would never think this is weird because my family has always enjoyed eating our spaghetti on top of our slices of garlic bread. To think, all this time I thought we were the only ones who ate the two things together. Glad to know someone else likes the same.

Gosh, if having this for dinner everytime I had a bad day at work I'd eat nothing else lol. I have a lot of bad days!!!!! But you are right, sometimes you just can't beat the classics ;0)

ReplyDeleteWOW...my first though, is carbs overload...LOL! ;o) My sister loved tinned spaghetti as child--and especially that kind with the franks in. I just could couldn't handle it--and still can't... the spaghetti too soft, and like you say--I suspect that's not real tomato sauce either...haha! But your homemade versoin of this I'd almost have to try. You know me, I'm one to pimp things up too. ;o) So sorry Todd's tooth is still ailing... hope he finds some relief soon. Marie, do you have a tip for keeping the toast crisp once the spaghetti has landed? I've tried fried bread, but this removes the `instant slut' element, so dear to my heart.

ReplyDeleteBunny, I think if anyone could solve the soggy toast dilema they'd be a millionaire. Other than coating it with teflon, which would not be tasty at all, I can't think of nothing. Embrace the sog! Just gobble it up as quickly as you can before it gets too soggy I spose!
ReplyDeleteI love it Marie! Even the best of cooks need a break every now and then and this is definitely one of those guilty pleasures. Mine is an American processed cheese grilled cheese sandwich with a side of tinned tomato soup. Yum!

COMFORT FOOD OF THE FIRST ORDER by that brought back some memories, something my Mum used to make for us on a regular basis. Had quite nearly forgotten about that - thanks for reminding me. Another good one is tinned tomatoes on toast cooked with some balsamic vinegar or fresh tomatoes open roasted with garlic, balsamic vinegar, basil and sea salt.

Not normally one to comment, but to answer the soggy toast question. Put the spaghetti in a bowl separate to the toast and just add a spoonful at a time on the bit of toast you're going to eat, or dip the toast in! Super Noodles on toast is nice too!

ReplyDeleteMarie, if my boys were little again I'd make this for them, bet they'd love it! My mom used to cut hotdogs like that and fry them, then add canned beans. We thought that was special! haha...never had it on toast, I bet it'd be good.
